The Squirrels is a charming, late Victorian cottage and its space, large wrap-around garden, location and character immediately appealed to the present owners.
The cottage stands in the friendly hamlet of Priestwood Green. It is an attractive semi rural position between Meopham and Harvel, both quintessentially pretty English villages, complete with village green, pubs, an active community life and surrounded by the gloriously beautiful Kent countryside. The station is an approximately five minute drive from the house, with trains into Victoria and Blackfriars.
Meopham has three schools, with the secondary a specialist sports academy. Gravesend and Mayfield Grammar schools are nearby, plus there is a choice of public schools in Gravesend and Rochester.
The owners have enjoyed a good lifestyle in Meopham, as it combines the best of town and country living. Tonbridge, Sevenoaks and Gravesend are half an hour away: but on a sunny afternoon you can relax on the idyllic village green where cricket has been played since the eighteenth century.
Before the present owners, The Squirrels belonged to the same family for half a century, and during that time has been extended to create a light, roomy and enchanting home which combines its original appealing and quirky characteristics with the comforts of modern living.
The family love the bright and welcoming ambience that fills the house. It has been a joy to open the French doors in the summer when house and garden blend into one, and the patio becomes a summer dining room. A fire in the cosy study creates a snug winter refuge, and the fire in the dining room ensures a relaxing atmosphere for congenial wintry entertaining. It is an agreeable all year restful home.
The Squirrels offers great hospitality and guests have a superb first reception when they enter the hallway, complete with fireplace. Then continue into the house to be fascinated by the two staircases and the history suggested by the old black kitchen range which sits in contrast to the modern range cooker in the well equipped kitchen.
The lawns, mature trees and shrubbery create a pleasingly large, peaceful and private oasis for the family. It is a setting where children can enjoy garden games, and adults can relax on the patio or have large summer parties. The ‘Den’ is a superb feature and is currently used as a games room but has potential for other uses.
The owners contemplated many years of contented family life in The Squirrels but a work relocation means they have to move. They will miss the entire package the house provides but in particular the beauty and enchantment of the garden. They take away many happy memories.
