Seller Insight Occupying a sought-after semirural location on the edge of the well-served village of Longfield is Marylands, an extremely attractive four-bedroom bungalow that boasts an acre of land and spectacular countryside views. Before we had the bungalow built back in 1998 we were only living just across the way, and it was a friend of ours who initially owned the plot of land," says Maggie. We'd been thinking about a move, but we were finding it hard to find the right house in the right location, and a property that had a bit of land so that I could keep my horses at home. We liked the idea of being able to build our own home to our own specifications, and so when our friend offered us the chance to buy the plot, everything fell into place, adds Ken.
"The bungalow is a Potton home so it was quite ahead of its time when it was built in the late 1990s, and we've found it to be very energy efficient and therefore extremely economical to run, continues Ken. It was also designed to fit nicely into its semirural surroundings and to take full advantage of the breathtaking views; on a clear day we can see right the way across beautiful rolling countryside all the way to Essex! Inside it's very spacious and bright, and we had features such as the very impressive inglenook and traditional wooden doors with cast iron latches fitted, which combine to give it a lovely cottagey feel, says Maggie. All in all it's a gorgeous home and extremely comfortable, and it's also been a lovely place to entertain and indeed accommodate visiting friends and family.
We have around 1.2 acres of land including the driveway, which incorporates a lovely formal garden that wraps around the bungalow, and a vast area of lawn that rolls down into the paddock at the bottom, continues Ken. I'd say we've designed the space with ease of maintenance in mind – a quick spin on the ride-on mower and the lawn is done – but we've added some lovely plants that give lots of colour throughout the year. There are fruit trees dotted here and there, and my vegetable patch has received a lot of praise, but that's the beauty of having a generous amount of land, you can essentially do what you want. We also have a large barn inside which there are three stables, a tack room and a storage area, and I've relished having my horses at home, adds Maggie. It's definitely a place that has afforded us both a really lovely quality of life.
Favourite room: Our favourite room is without doubt the lounge; whenever anyone sees it for the first time they always say, 'wow'. It's a large room with a beautiful vaulted ceiling, which is an unusual feature for a bungalow, and it's double aspect so it overlooks both the front of the property and the magnificent views to the back.
Favourite aspect of the grounds or surrounding area: We've lived in the area for many years now and we absolutely love it here. We have miles of glorious countryside right on our doorstep, we can be shopping in Bluewater in around ten minutes or hop on the train at Ebbsfleet and either head into London, which takes just nineteen minutes, or really push the boat out and take the Eurostar to Paris!
Memorable event (if not another favourite room or unique feature): The bungalow is just lovely as it is, but we've recently investigated the possibility of enhancing it further by adding an extension. We've gone so far as to have plans drawn up by Potton and we've also submitted the application so that could be a very exciting project for the new owners.
What they'll miss most / why they are leaving: We're moving to be closer to our son and grandchildren, but we're going to be so sad to leave Marylands, says Ken. For us it's been the perfect home and we've been incredibly happy here. I don't think we'll find anywhere else that even compares.
