Otford Village is an attractive 16th century village approximately 3.7 miles from Sevenoaks town centre. The village has a variety of small shops, historic houses, several pubs and a restaurant, a 16th century church, a library, the village primary school and nursery, a recreation ground and playground for small children as well as two halls which host events and club meetings. There are two private prep schools in the area: St Michael's school which takes children from age 2 to 13, and Russell House School. At the centre of the village is a very picturesque spring-filled pond which is the location of the smallest listed duck pond in England. The attractive village green is surrounded by historic buildings including Chantry Cottage and St Bartholomew's Church. Otford has a mainline rail service with frequent services to Victoria. Sevenoaks mainline station is approximately 3 miles away and provides frequent services to London Bridge/ Charing Cross.DIRECTIONS

This exceptionally lovely family home that over time has been both extended and beautifully refurbished by the current owners, occupies a coveted location in the delightful Kent village of Otford. “The house that originally sat on this plot was built at some point in the 1950s, but it was quite small, and it was generally in a very sorry state, but it was a combination of its potential and this fabulous setting that initially drew us to it,” says Jean, the current vendor. “The property sits on this beautiful private road and we have a wonderfully large south-facing garden that backs onto nothing but open woodland, so it’s very peaceful and we enjoy a fabulous degree of privacy. Otford station and a really good array of shops is just a short distance away. For us it has been the ideal location, which is the reason that we have stayed here for over twenty-eight years.”
As the original building was in such poor condition and not at all conducive to modern living, the owners decided to demolish a substantial part of the original house and rebuild what is now a large and beautifully appointed family home. The layout works really well and there’s a fabulous feeling of both light and space throughout, and we feel that we’ve designed a house that’s both easy to live in and to maintain.”
“In 2015 we added another large extension to create an annex for our daughter and her family,” continues Jean. ’’Although it is attached to the main house it is completely self contained and incorporates three bedrooms, one of which is en suite, a luxury bathroom, a custom built kitchen/diner and a lovely sitting room. A Norwegian Pine pool house has been erected over the heated swimming pool so that we can use it for a greater proportion of the year. Next to the pool is a lovely covered seating area where we can sit and admire the view. It’s all taken a lot of time and hard work to develop, but it’s now the most wonderful family home.”
Favourite Room: “I think I’d probably choose the conservatory as my favourite part of the house,” says Jean. “We use it for most of the year and it allows us to enjoy our beautiful garden whatever the weather.”
Favourite aspect of the grounds or surrounding area: “For us the location really couldn’t have been better,” says Jean. “We can walk to the village, which has two cosy pubs, a restaurant and coffee shop's. There’s also a school, so it’s a lovely place to raise a family, and we can hop on a train at the nearby station and be in London in under an hour so it’s also a great base for commuters.”
Memorable event (if not another favourite room or unique feature): “This has been a house in which we’ve had so many good times and a great many wonderful parties,” says Jean. “We’ve had 70th, 80th and 90th birthday celebrations, a Silver Wedding anniversary and a particularly memorable Golden Wedding party for which we had a huge marquee in the garden and a lot of the guests stayed for a big BBQ the next day. We’ll definitely take some fantastic memories with us when we leave.”
What they’ll miss most / why they are leaving: “There’s so much that I think we’ll miss, but for me the biggest thing will be the garden,” says Jean. “Being able to just sit out there and enjoy utter peace and tranquillity has been such a joy.”
