The village of Shoreham sits beside the River Darent as it winds through the North Downs and is situated six miles north of Sevenoaks, in an Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Reputed to be the most bombed village in Britain, the famous great white cross cut in the chalk hillside is a monument to commemorate the dead of the First World War. The fascinating Shoreham Aircraft Museum holds hundreds of aviation relics and has a charming tea room and tea garden. The village has a primary school, recreation ground, several pubs serving food, an excellent village store and post office. Shoreham Village hosts lots of events throughout the year, including the famed 'Duck' Race, Village Fete, Garden Safari, Midsummer Festival and the Heavy Horse Show. The Mount in Shoreham is a boutique Vineyard producing award winning still and sparkling wines and holds regular wine tasting events. Darenth Valley golf course is located on the edge of the village. Shoreham railway station has trains on the Victoria line, Blackfriars, St Pancras, the line also goes direct to Sevenoaks in just 9 minutes, where there are a variety of trains into central London, taking approximately 40 minutes. “I was first attracted to the property by its unique character,” says the current owner of Flint Cottage in Shoreham. “Passers-by often stop to look at the façade of the Grade II listed cottage, which oozes with period charm. It is spacious and private, yet not isolated, and in a beautiful, accessible village.”
The cottage offers generous living accommodation ideal for family life. “The house has very spacious bedrooms and various downstairs rooms,” says the owner, “with two garages for car parking and storage. Since purchasing the property, we have redecorated throughout, as well as improving the sunny and sheltered, low maintenance, garden.”
In terms of location, the property enjoys the best of village life and local conveniences. “The cottage lies in a quiet yet accessible location off Shoreham Church Road, which doesn’t get much through traffic,” says the owner. “Shoreham is an extremely friendly village, assessed by the Times some months ago to be the second best in the Top 20 villages to live in, in England! We think it is the best! There are no less than four great pubs in the village, a variety of golf courses not far away, and very active Historical, Drama, Horticultural, Church and other associations. The Mount Vineyard is fast becoming a ‘place to be’. There is also a good village shop, and Sainsbury’s just 10 Minutes’ drive away in Otford. There is a highly regarded primary school in the village, and of course Sevenoaks and other schools are not too far away.”
“The railway station is just 8 minutes’ walk up the hill,” the owner continues, “with Sevenoaks only 10-15 minutes away by train and Blackfriars about 50 minutes, almost always with a seat! Sevenoaks to London Bridge is about a 25 minute journey, with plenty of other connections via Sevenoaks. Gatwick is roughly 40 minutes’ drive away.”
What they will miss most
“Shoreham is a beautiful and truly special place to live, with an incredibly friendly community, local amenities and plenty going on, as well as access to excellent schooling.”
“The exterior of the cottage is perhaps my favourite part, with its pretty frontage.”
Best thing about the grounds/local area
“There are lots of nice country walks around Shoreham, even though it is just 18 miles from London! Plenty of golf opportunities, local events, and most of all, a fantastic community”.
“Visitors and passers-by often comment on how picturesque the cottage is, with the sunny garden changing through the seasons and framing the façade.”
